President’s Corner:
Britton Vander Linden, Indianola High School Varsity golfer, qualified for the class 4-A state golf meet and then placed 16th in the State at the 4-A level. He shot 76 in the district qualifier and then shot 79-79 in the two-day state tournament. Nice job Britton!
David Dunn had a hole-in-one in October. He is an ICC Men’s Association member and the hole-in-one insurance he received as part of his association dues paid him $100. Congrats David.
The clubhouse will continue to open at 8:00 am during the month of November. Please note however that if nighttime temperatures dip to near freezing, there may be frost on the course. When this is the case, the clubhouse will most likely not open until 10:00 am. Also, the clubhouse will remain open into the evening as long as there is business. If you plan on playing golf right up until dark, don’t count on the clubhouse being open. It may not be. If you have any questions about clubhouse hours just call the club at 961-3303.
Pro’s Corner:
This year the PGA along with the USGA implemented a program called TEE IT FORWARD. This program in a new national initiative being conducted at golf facilities nationwide. This program is encouraging all golfers to play the course at a length that is best suited to their abilities. With TEE IT FORWARD, golfers can potentially speed up play and have more fun by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. Too many times we get wrapped up in the color or name of the tees. In the example I've given you above the Red Tees or Ladies Tees at our facility should not be just for females. These tees, along with all the others, should be the tees used based on your average driving distance. Below is a chart that the PGA has provided with the 18-Hole yardage recommendations based on your driver distance.
Driver Distance Recommended 18-Hole Yardages
275 6700 - 6900
250 6200 - 6400
225 5800 - 6000
200 5200 - 5400
175 4400 - 46000
150 3500 - 3700
125 2800 - 3000
100 2100 - 2300
Please keep this in mind when selecting your tees not only at ICC but also at other courses. This is an excellent chart to have when playing a new course with multiple sets of tees. It is extremely important for the junior golfer along with the beginning player to select the correct tees that enable them to enjoy the game. Remember, if the forward tees are too long then it is just fine to tee off from the middle of the fairway at a fair yet challenging yardage.
The last day to post scores made within the IGA's region this season is Monday, October 31st. While there will hopefully be some good playing days later this fall and winter, scores made within the IGA's regions from November 1st, 2011-March 31st, 2012 cannot be posted for handicap purposes. However, all acceptable scores made in areas which are in an active season must be posted. For instance, if you winter in Arizona, Texas, Florida, etc. you may continue to post scores online by visiting ghin.com and then entering your ghin number. If you don't know your GHIN number and you are spending the off season in a active region please let me know and I can get your number for you.
SEE HOLIDAY FLYER AT THE END OF THE NEWSLETTER FOR GREAT PRO SHOP DEALS!!
From the Greens Committee/Superintendent:
The driving range closed in mid-October so that we could get it seeded in anticipation of opening for full use in the Spring of 2011. We saw a lot of you using the range and that is fantastic! We are glad to provide this amenity to the membership and hope to see it benefit us further in years to come. If you have comments about the range, please direct them to one of the greens committee members listed below.
We told you in this newsletter last month that the GUR bunkers on #15 and #18 would be filled in and sodded in the near future. If you played lately you’ve likely notice that is partially true. Joe and his staff have been working on these areas but after some discussion decided to leave a smaller, less maintenance intensive bunker on #15.
We will keep the course open as long as the weather cooperates but as we move into November, don’t be surprised to see e-mails announcing the closing of the course – either temporarily due to weather, or permanently for the year. As always please observe any signs or instructions from the clubhouse regarding cart path usage and other course conditions.
As always, please contact a member of the Greens Committee with any questions or concerns.

From the Mens Association:
The ICC Men’s Association will be working on a new design for the cart path turn-arounds on the course. They will be doing hole #16 yet this fall and will allow all members to view the new design and provide feedback about the plan before continuing on the rest of the course. It will involve concrete in the center of the cart path with embedding rock and imprinting designs within the concrete. Watch for it and be sure to let the association know what you think.
